Stress

"When a person falls apart at the mention of a difficult situation, it usually means bubbling just below the surface is a cauldron of emotions, and suppressing those feelings can drain you... you need to take care of yourself before you can take care of others."

Strong and Immovable

January 2009 Visiting Teaching Message:

“Be steadfast and immovable, always abounding in good works, that Christ, the Lord God Omnipotent, may seal you his, that you may be brought to heaven, that ye may have everlasting salvation and eternal life.” Mosiah 5:15

How Can I Stand Strong and Immovable in Faith?

3 Nephi 6:14: “The church was broken up in all the land save it were among a few of the Lamanites who were converted unto the true faith; and they would not depart from it, for they were firm, and steadfast, and immovable, willing with all diligence to keep the commandments of the Lord.”

Nearer my God to Thee

Sung by faithful Saints through many years of living since the 1800's:

Nearer my God to thee,
Nearer to thee!
E’en though it be a cross
That raiseth me.
Still all my song shall be
Nearer, my God, to thee,
Nearer, my God, to thee,
Nearer to thee!

Though like the wanderer,
The sun gone down,
Darkness be over me,
My rest a stone,
Yet in my dreams I’d be
Nearer, my God, to thee,
Nearer, my God, to thee,
Nearer to thee!

There let the way appear
Steps unto heav’n;
All that thou sendest me,
In mercy given;
Angels to beckon me
Nearer, my God, to thee,
Nearer, my God, to thee,
Nearer to thee!

Then with my waking thoughts
Bright with thy praise,
Out of my stony griefs
Bethel I’ll raise;
So by my woes to be
Nearer, my God, to thee,
Nearer, my God, to thee,
Nearer to thee!

Correction/Encouragement

"Correction does much; but encouragement does more."
Johann Wolfgang van Goethe

Stormy Human Weather

"Imagine a businessman who has to travel to a stormy country for a lengthy visit.

Upon arriving he finds himself surrounded by blasting winds and flooding rains. Although baffled at first, he soon sees what he must do. He must study and understand the cruel weather, which he does.

With great satisfaction he discovers that the storms have no personal effect on him, for he has learned how to keep himself safe.

You can achieve the same kind of success when surrounded by stormy human weather. You can command it completely by understanding it thoroughly."

- Vernon Howard - 50 Ways to Escape Cruel People.

Charity for all

2 Nephi 32:3 … Do ye not remember that I said unto you that after ye have received the Holy Ghost ye could speak with the tongue of angels? And now, how could ye speak with the tongue of angels save it were by the Holy Ghost?

V9 … But behold I say unto you that ye must pray always, and not faint; that ye must not perform any thing unto the Lord save in the first place ye shall pray unto the Father in the name of Christ, that he will consecrate thy performance unto thee, that thy performance may be for the welfare of thy soul.

33:4 … And I know that the Lord God will consecrate my prayers for the gain of my people…

v8 … I have charity for the Jew…

v9 … I also have charity for the Gentiles. But behold, for none of these can I hope except they shall be reconciled unto Christ, and enter in at the narrow gate, and walk in the straight path which leads to life, and continue in the path until the end of the day of probation.

V12 … And I pray the Father in the name of Christ that many of us, if not all, may be saved in his kingdom at the great and last day.

The Oyster

There once was an oyster whose story I'll tell,
Who found that some sand had worked into her shell.
Just one little grain, but it gave her a pain,
For oysters have feelings, for all they're so plain.

Now did she berate this working of fate
That led her to this deplorable state?
Did she curse at the government, call for election,
And cry that the sea should be given protection?

"No!" she said to herself as she sat on the shelf.
"Since I cannot remove it, I choose to improve it!"

Well, the years rolled around as the years always do,
And she came to her ultimate destiny - stew.
But the small grain of sand that had bothered her so
Was a beautiful pearl all richly aglow.
**********************************************
This tale has a moral: Isn't it grand
What an oyster can do with a morsel of sand?

What couldn't I do if I'd only begin
With all the things that get under my skin?

and the other version I prefer in some circumstances:

There once was an oyster whose story I'll tell,
Who found that some sand had worked into her shell.
Just one little grain, but it gave her a pain,
For oysters have feelings, for all they're so plain.

Now did she berate this working of fate
That led her to this deplorable state?
Did she curse at the government, call for election,
And cry that the sea should be given protection?

"No!" she said to herself as she sat on the shelf.
"Though I choose not to loose it, I still will improve it!"

Well, the years rolled around as the years always do,
And she came to her ultimate destiny - stew.
And the small speck of sand that had bothered her so
Was a beautiful pearl all richly aglow.
